About me

About me

This is my story

I am a bicultural and bilingual psychotherapist with extensive experience working with individuals, families, and couples with diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds. I have been in my clinical practice for over 30 years. My educational background includes a Doctor in Clinical Psychology from The Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. I have an M.A. in Psychology both from the Derner School/ Adelphi University and the University of Belgrade. I’ve completed my post-graduate training in Family and Couples therapy at Ackerman Institute for the Family. I am a licensed Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist in New York & Certified Couples and Family Therapist- Ackerman Institute for the Family.

Over the years, I have been privileged to study and work in a variety of academic and clinical settings both in New York and internationally. My professional engagements include: work as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, Clinical Faculty at NYU School of Medicine, an Alumna of the Ackerman Institute
for the Family, Board of Directors at American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA), Visiting Scholar at the University of Belgrade, Associate of the Tavistock Clinic/London/UK Conference Chair/International Family Therapy Association (IFTA).

While crafting my skills as a psychotherapist, I had the privilege of learning and working with masters in the field: Salvador Minuchin, Peggy Papp, Michael White just to name a few. My approach to psychotherapy is unique as it is very much influenced by my background: born and raised in Belgrade/ Former Yugoslavia, having worked and trained both in Belgrade and New York City I have deep roots in two countries.

My professional and personal life has been about moving between multiple languages and cultures. Drawing from my own personal experiences as an immigrant woman, I have developed a particular interest in working with people who are transitioning between cultures, both refugees and internationals.
Whether we came to this country by choice or whether the decision was made out of necessity, immigration experiences shape our relationships with others.

My primary interest is working with individuals, couples, and families who are negotiating these life transitions, who are moving between cultures and languages.

Intercultural, interracial, and inter-religious families are in an ongoing state of cultural negotiation one that plays out in their homes, in their bedrooms and kitchens, one that influences child-rearing practices as well as sexual interactions.

I also specialize in complex trauma, issues of domestic violence, as well as child and adult sexual abuse.

One most rewarding task I undertake is writing psychological evaluations for people who are seeking political asylum and/or claims extreme hardship.
